In Command: Q&A With Lt. Col. Robert D. Burke Few are given the opportunity to command a battalion in a combat zone. And to be a commander is, arguably, the highlight of an officer's career. For Lt. Col. Robert Burke '89, squadron commander of 1st Squadron, 152nd Cavalry Recon, Surveillance, and Target Acquisition, service and commanding have been a part of his life since birth. In "The Box": 2006 grad plays war games for real As a young boy, Patrick J. Halloran '06 dreamed of being in the Army, building tanks with his Legos and drawing battle scenes with his crayons. He played army in the woods behind his home, slipping into battle dress uniform and covering his face in war paint. Now a 23-year-old Army first lieutenant, Halloran is still playing dress-up. His first assignment from the Army was to grow a beard and impersonate an Iraqi while stationed in California's Mojave Desert. Halloran is garrisoned at "The Box," a training center in Fort Irwin, Calif., where several simulated Iraqi villages are scattered over an area the size of Rhode Island to create a realistic training environment. A Silver Star for 2003 alumnus The deadly, close-range firefight that destroyed Capt. Gianoulis ("John") Roussos' armored Humvee in southwestern Iraq lasted no more than 90 seconds. Roussos put his own life on the line as he bolted from the Humvee to draw fire away from the four men under his command in the crippled vehicle, gunning down two of the insurgents along the way in the bloody March 7 encounter.
