Renaissance man: President Schneider laid groundwork for Norwich's future
Norwich University President Richard W. SchneiderNear the end of his inaugural address, Richard Schneider made his priorities as the newly appointed president of Norwich University crystal-clear. "A school is nothing but a building with four walls and a roof and the future inside," he told the crowd. "I'm in the futures business."

Sixteen years later, the future looks bright. Shortly after Schneider arrived in the summer of 1992, he started building a foundation for the renaissance that is now underway. Through Schneider's leadership, enrollment has increased, the institution's endowment has grown significantly and construction projects have transformed the campus. He hasn't finished.

Cadets hone diplomatic skills in Croatia
Norwich University Cadets in CroatiaFrom the windows of a modern hotel in the Croatian city of Vukovar, three Norwich cadets saw a stark reminder of war's cost and the lengths people will go to gain their freedom.

What had been a shopping mall before the country's armed struggle for independence was now a pile of rubble. Buildings still bore damage from bullets and shrapnel. They also saw warning signs for minefields and monuments over mass graves.
"They fought for their independence less than 20 years ago," said Kevin Wheeler, Class of 2009. "The scars are still there."
Wheeler and fellow students Veronica Stewart '09 and Kyle Shortsleeve '09 had the opportunity to tour Croatia for two weeks in May. The trio met with members of the country's armed forces and cadets from the Balkan nation's two military academies on a program designed to foster military diplomacy.

Battlefields come to life for SGS students
Norwich University School of Graduate Studies studentsWalking the 50 steps from one end of the Bloody Angle to the other, it is easy to imagine the horrors of the May 12, 1864, battle that took some 18,000 American lives, according to Dr. Charles Sanders.

"You can read that in a book, but when I take the students there and they see that the space we're talking about is so small and so compact; then you talk about the violence and the ferocity of the fighting, it's so immediate," said Sanders, a history professor who led a May tour of battlefields attended by Norwich University graduate students.

Online cohorts team up in professional world
Salina, Kans., and Mountain View, Calif., are more than 1,700 miles and two time zones apart. But in the virtual world of an online graduate program, distance and time were not a barrier to two men - one at the beginning of his career and the other a retired NFL defensive guard, now vice-president of a Silicon Valley company.
