Norwich students learn a lesson in relative values For Americans, a pencil is useful for marking nail holes or tallying golf scores. But in the Republic of The Gambia, the simple tool of wood and graphite has far greater powers. “When you can put a huge, warm smile on someone’s face just by giving them something as small as a pencil,” says Emily Shapiro, a psychology major from Middlesex, Vermont, “it lights a fire inside of you that you never knew you had.”
Shapiro is one of several NU students who traveled to the tiny West African country to study primary and secondary education and perform service in schools. Continued at www.norwich.edu...

NU rugby player represents U.S. team in Nations Cup When Katie Hathaway arrived on campus in August 2008, she had no idea she would play rugby. A three-sport athlete in high school, Hathaway had never touched a rugby ball, but after an outstanding freshman season, she was asked to attend the Under-20 National team player camp, and the following April was offered a spot on the squad. In July, Katie and 24 other elite female rugby players travelled to London to represent the United States in the Nations Cup. Continued at www.norwichathletics.com...
