Students deepen relationship with the people of Matagalpa, Nicaragua Ten students and three staff members traveled to Central America in May 2009 with NU VISIONS Abroad for a service-learning experience, building on a trip taken the previous year. Students taught English, lived with local residents and worked on the library that is the major project of Montpelier nonprofit Planting Hope. New dorm and bridge to welcome students in August Norwich’s newest dormitory, South Hall, and the nearby pedestrian bridge will be open and ready for students when they arrive in mid-August. Crews were moving furniture into South Hall during the final days of July, preparing the five-story brick dorm for the beginning of the fall semester. Tucked into a stand of pines just behind and above Hayden Hall, South Hall will provide housing for up to 283 civilian students. Continued at www.alumni.norwich.edu/dormandbridge...

NUARI and Senator Leahy announce $7.7 million in funding for cyber security research On July 17, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) announced $7.7 million in new federal funding for Norwich University to carry out cyber-security projects, solidifying the university’s place as a leader in protecting the nation’s computers against cyber attacks. NUARI, the school’s applied research arm, will provide the Department of Homeland Security with training and software that will improve the country’s ability to ward off the kind of cyber attacks that recently disrupted key government and commercial websites in the United States and several other countries. Spin fryer developer oversees debut of entrepreneurship program The job market is weak and changing dramatically. In response, the David Crawford School of Engineering at Norwich University is teaching students to create opportunities for themselves. “Typically, a lot of engineers become entrepreneurs. They just start their own businesses,” said Ben DiMiero, a 2009 graduate and one of the “guinea pigs” in a program to show budding engineers how to take ideas beyond the research and development stage. Building the right future with an MCE degree Dawn Flores is popular among builders and homeowners in Sammamish, Wash. Flores, a plans examiner for the Seattle suburb and a student in Norwich University's Master of Civil Engineering (MCE) program, is the mastermind behind the city's new "over-the-counter" permitting process. Thanks to Flores and her team, the city can now issue building permits for 22 types of small home improvements in about an hour. Continued at: www.graduate.norwich.edu...
