CHARITABLE IRA ROLLOVER LAW RENEWED!
The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 renewed the provision to allow individuals to make charitable contributions tax-free using retirement assets. This legislation replaced the Pension Protection Act of 2006 and will allow tax-free contributions of up to $100,000 per year for individuals aged 70 ½ and older.

Planting HopePlanting hope in Central America: First leg of the journey
Last May, 15 Norwich students traveled to Nicaragua to take part in the first phase of a three-year service-learning project in collaboration with Planting Hope.  Working side-by-side with residents of San Ramon and Matagalpa, the travelers taught English to school children, cataloged library books, painted a rural school and worked on a reforestation project.

Student filmmakers give voice to veterans war experience
War at Home to document soldiers' re-entry to life at home.
Student producer Brad Panasiti, 23, from Amherst , N.H., says the project has taught him more than how to run a camera or edit on a computer screen. "We are learning interview skills; how to reach out to people; how to get accurate information," he said.

Cadets consider new leader, new future
As students and citizens, cadets here tracked the presidential campaign with the same subjectivity and skepticism as their civilian counterparts. As future servicemen and women, however, they will execute without condition the foreign-policy directives of their next commander in chief.

The second annual CSI Symposium brought several renowned forensic specialists to Norwich on January 29 and 30 to talk about crime scene investigation. Among them were Investigator Robert B. Appleton '92, and Col. Vincent J. Sava '80, USAR.

More changes in Development & Alumni Relations
In mid-March, Norwich University will welcome Christopher D. Heaney '90, as the newest member of the Office of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR).  Heaney, who has worked as the annual fund director at the Hillside School in Massachusetts for the past two years, is joining DAR as a development officer. His prior experience includes 15 years in medical sales.

A call for NU Alumni Association award nominees
The NU Alumni Association presents special awards to deserving alumni and friends who represent the Norwich ideals of service to others, giving generously of their time, talents, and resources to the University. Awards are presented on Saturday of Homecoming Weekend during the alumni parade. Primary consideration will be given to alumni nominated with class years ending in "4" and "9". NU Computer Security HandbookMSIA program leaves fingerprints all over Computer Security Handbook
The publication of the fifth edition of the Computer Security Handbook demonstrates Norwich University's continuing leadership in the booming field of information assurance. Count the set of fingerprints on this latest edition, due out in February 2009: out of 80 contributors, 37 people with Norwich connections edited or contributed material for the 1,984-page, two-volume package.

Hooked on Hockey? Call for NU Hockey artifacts
It's time to search your closet, attic, and memory.for artifacts and information about Norwich Hockey! An exhibition, Hooked on Hockey: Milestones of Norwich Hockey, 1909-2009, is currently being planned by the NU Athletic Department and the Sullivan Museum for fall 2009. The exhibition will include stories of NU hockey coaches, players, and fans, along with the three "arenas" where the games were held-Sabine Field, Taylor Arena and Kreitzberg! Do not send any artifacts at this time-but call (802-485-2448) or write (msolvay@norwich.edu) to put your hockey treasures and hockey memories on the list. Early game footage also needs to be tracked down!

If you have looked at the NU Online Community site recently, you may have noticed a new resource in the "Career Center" section. It's called "Alumni Career Toolkit: Eight Steps to a Successful Job Search," and contains a wealth of information to help alums in every stage of the job search process. Topics covered include: Preparation and Research, Developing Your Communication Plan, Targeting Companies, and more.  The Career Development Center wishes to acknowledge Bob Wolfenden '79 and his colleagues at Lehigh University, whose generosity and sharing of information and ideas, made this resource available.
