February 2009 Vol. 6 · Issue 9
Hello, welcome to @NU, the Norwich e-Newsletter, your direct link to campus and the entire Norwich Family! Delivered to your inbox monthly, each issue provides a sampling of news, information and features now available to you on our Online Community. We hope you will use this exciting tool to connect with the University, classmates, friends, and other Norwich parents and families. A letter from President Schneider Our nation is experiencing one of its deepest recessions since the 1930s. Every sector of our economy has been hit, including higher education. Most colleges across the nation have already cut their budgets and are planning further reductions. No type of institution is immune -- from the wealthiest (Yale, forecasting a $100 million budget shortfall in fiscal 2010), to our neighbors (UVM, a $28 million deficit), to our fellow Senior Military Colleges (The Citadel, a $2.7 million shortfall). I want all members of the Norwich family to understand the steps we have taken to keep our fiscal house in order. The purpose of this letter is to provide you with a summary of budget cuts I have approved during the past two months. Continued at alumni.norwich.edu/schneiderfeb09...
Father, son reunite in Iraq war zone The first time father-and-son soldiers Tom and John Driscoll met in Iraq, the elder snapped a salute with the words, "Chief Warrant Officer Driscoll, reporting as ordered." "It was surreal," said the 28-year-old son, a 2002 Norwich graduate, U.S. Army captain, and third generation army pilot. The pair hugged, and Captain Driscoll tried to absorb the sudden overlapping of his worlds. Here was his dad, his hero, in a war zone. And they were wearing the same uniform, though John, the son, had the brass. Continued at sunjournal.com.... |
Hell's Bells: Marine helicopter pilot's road to Iraq began on "the Hill" During Rook Week recruit Blecha stood in formation with the other freshmen in their tan slacks, white t-shirts and silly maroon hats. For one moment he wondered what he'd gotten himself into and what would happen next. "Hells Bells" by AC/DC blared from stereo speakers. A cannon blasted and the freshmen began their lives as cadets. The Cadre descended on the freshmen. "That was one of my most memorable weeks in that school," said Captain Dustin Blecha '03, now a UH-1N Huey pilot with Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 269. "Your whole world turns upside down." Continued at alumni.norwich.edu/blecha... |

David Robins completed portions of their degree programs from the front lines of the global war on terror. Brown, 43, a fifth-seminar Master of Arts in Diplomacy [MDY] student, is finishing up the degree he started during a 15-month deployment to Kirkuk province, Iraq, where he served as deputy brigade commander of the Army's 1st Brigade Combat Team. Robins, 26, stationed in Vicenza, Italy, is in his final seminar of the Master of Public Administration [MPA] program. He returned in September from a 15-month tour in the Konar province of Afghanistan with the Army's 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team. Like Brown, he wanted a program he could work on while serving overseas that fit his ideals. Continued at graduate.norwich.edu... |
