- Reunions and Random Sightings

Hopefully you were here on campus in September for Homecoming or your 5th, 25th or 45th reunion, but what if you were stuck in Poughkeepsie, or even Iraq?  Maybe you ran into just a couple of classmates or a professor while you were far from home or just around the corner at your favorite place.  These Reunions and Random sightings can be fun and wonderful even if they don't take place on the "Hill".  Post your own note, or just see what other Norwich alumni and friends are up to online.

"Rock" star Dr. Robert M. Hazen came to Norwich for two days in early October to share his research on the evolution of life from the interaction of minerals with molecules. Norwich University grad Robert Burke '89In Command: Q&A With Lt. Col. Robert D. Burke
Few are given the opportunity to command a battalion in a combat zone. And to be a commander is, arguably, the highlight of an officer's career. For Lt. Col. In "The Box": 2006 grad plays war games for real
As a young boy, Patrick J. Halloran '06 dreamed of being in the Army, building tanks with his Legos and drawing battle scenes with his crayons. He played army in the woods behind his home, slipping into battle dress uniform and covering his face in war paint. Now a 23-year-old Army first lieutenant, Halloran is still playing dress-up. His first assignment from the Army was to grow a beard and impersonate an Iraqi while stationed in California's Mojave Desert. Halloran is garrisoned at "The Box," a training center in Fort Irwin, Calif., where several simulated Iraqi villages are scattered over an area the size of Rhode Island to create a realistic training environment.

A Silver Star for 2003 alumnus
The deadly, close-range firefight that destroyed Capt. Gianoulis ("John") Roussos' armored Humvee in southwestern Iraq lasted no more than 90 seconds. Roussos put his own life on the line as he bolted from the Humvee to draw fire away from the four men under his command in the crippled vehicle, gunning down two of the insurgents along the way in the bloody March 7 encounter. The maneuver earned the Princeton, N.J. native the Silver Star Medal.
