Norwich University Commencement 2010NU commissions 100, graduates 400
The weekend of May 15 and 16 was filled with pomp, circumstance and abundant artillery fire, as nearly 400 undergraduates received their bachelor's degrees and 100 new ensigns and second lieutenants were commissioned into the armed forces. America's first and only female four-star general, Anne Dunwoody, gave the commissioning address, and former McDonald's president Ed Rensi delivered the commencement address. See the full text of their remarks here.

Norwich graduate's service includes handing out hope
In 2003 Geroge Jones '10 was part of the first wave of U.S. Marines to land in Iraq. He was patrolling the streets when a little boy caught his eye. “I could tell he was scared, and I'm thinking to myself, ‘How can I help this kid? How can I make that kid think different? How can I make his life easier?'” Jones gave the boy his Nintendo Game Boy. “I walked up to the kid and said, ‘Here you go. Take this, it's for you.' And I see that smile light up,” Jones says. “I knew I made that little kid's life a little better.”

It sounds like a sappy cliché, until you learn that George Jones was a child of war himself.

Norwich student helps fellow soldiers return to site of injuries
Norwich University freshman Ken Butler served four tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan. Three years ago, on his last tour, Butler lost his right arm when his Humvee was hit by a roadside bomb on the outskirts of Baghdad. As VPR's Steve Zind reports, Butler found that returning to Iraq and to the place where he was injured had a therapeutic effect. Now he's helping other wounded soldiers who want to go back.

Norwich MBA program contributes to stabilization of Afghanistan
Maj. Mark Popov didn’t expect to use a business plan when working to bring stability and security to Afghanistan. The graduate of Norwich's MBA program is commander of B Squadron of the Royal Canadian Dragoons, a Canadian Battle Group reconnaissance squadron of about 1,100 soldiers whose responsibility is to find things—insurgents, weapons caches or information about a village. As commander, Popov works with local Afghan officials to establish a stabilization plan to bring peace and security to the district.
