The Norwich University Regimental Band continued its longstanding tradition of marching in not one, but two Patriots Day parades on Monday, April 19, 2010.

Mary Welz has accepted the position at Norwich of senior development officer in the Office of Development and Alumni Relations.New staff in the Office of Development and Alumni Relations
The Office of Development and Alumni Relations welcomes four new members to its staff. Mary Welz (pictured at left) joins us as a senior development officer. Mary brings with her an extensive and successful background in fundraising and building relationships, including spending time in the mid-'90s as director of the Norwich annual fund.

Saranac Lake native Denny Ryan '76 '76 grad honored as Lake Placid's distinguished volunteer of the year
Saranac Lake native Denny Ryan '76 was honored for his civic involvement in the Lake Placid community, stemming from his role as a commentator for the 1980 Olympics and the creator/producer of the Olympic Radio Network. He was also a member of the Lake Placid delegation to the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo in 1984 and in Calgary in 1988.

NU grad helps to keep water system safe in Baghdad
Hundreds of soldiers and civilians in Iraq have safe drinking water, thanks in part to a Norwich alumna serving in the war zone. The NU grad, who can’t reveal her name or profession for security reasons, is a civilian working for the U.S. government, primarily in Baghdad.

New degree promotes cultural awareness for Special Operations personnel
If you are in a Special Operations unit about to be deployed anywhere from the Hindu Kush to Colombia, you're going to need more than a Zagat's guide to understand where you are going.  The Bachelor of Science in Strategic Studies and Defense Analysis (SSDA), a new degree-completion program at Norwich University, aims to help Special Operations personnel gain a greater understanding of the complexities of the countries where they might serve.

Public works professor promotes the importance of sustainability
“Sustainability” is a catchword in farm, forestry and environmental circles that suggests prudent use of natural resources to prevent depletion and maintain environmental balance.

George Crombie, an instructor in Norwich University’s Master of Public Administration (MPA) program, is helping to create public works curricula that incorporate the values and real-world applications of sustainability.

“This is hugely important, because we no longer live in a world where resources are unlimited,” said Donal Hartman, director of Norwich’s MPA program.

Brendan T. MacDonald ’06 Memorial Alumni Lacrosse Game
On Sunday, May 2, former NU men's lacrosse players suited up for the annual Brendan T. MacDonald ’06 Memorial Alumni Lacrosse Game on Howard Field. “It was a great season for both our current roster and alumni," said Head Men's Coach Neal Anderson. "This event is just one way that we give back to the alumni and say a big thank you to Bob and LouEllen MacDonald for their continued support over the years.”

Norwich Women's Rugby Final 4
The Norwich Women's Rugby Team traveled to Stanford University for the Rugby Final 4. After a hard fought game, Washington State University beat Norwich 15-5. It was a great season for the Women's Rugby Team. Congratulations to the players and coaches.

Trooper Derek Davis, the national president of the 9th and 10th (Horse) Cavalry AssociationBuffalo Soldiers exhibit now open
The Buffalo Soldiers exhibit officially opened with a reception and ribbon-cutting on April 22, 2010. The exhibit, which runs through December 2010, is a salute to the 9th and 10th (Horse) Cavalry regiments, the men who served in their ranks, and their significant contributions to our country. Trooper Derrick Davis, the national president of the 9th and 10th (Horse) Cavalry Association, gave an informative talk to a standing-room only crowd about the Buffalo Soldiers stationed in Vermont in the early part of the 20th Century.

Unrestricted Giving
Bearing the Torch, Norwich University’s current fundraising effort, contains several giving priorities, including unrestricted giving. While that might sound like a catch-all category for alumni who can’t decide between other priorities, unrestricted gifts are important for several reasons.
