Sabine Field Renovation
As part of Bearing theTorch, the University’s current three-year fundraiser, Sabine Field will soon have a synthetic turf surface, allowing multiple teams, including soccer and lacrosse, to play in front of home crowds in the bleachers – even on the same day. “The challenge with the field currently is that we basically use it five times a year for football,” says Athletic Director Tony Mariano. “The field gets torn up in a game and you really can’t do anything with it for a week or even a week and a half.”

Goal assist: Hockey players study timely chemical issue
in biology lab

Chad Anderson has wildly divergent interests. Through much of the fall and winter, he spends his time on the ice of Norwich University’s Kreitzberg Arena hockey rink, where he’s one of the Cadets’ top scorers. With games, travel and practice on top of classes, it’s tough for the third-year student to find time for another passion; isolating strands of RNA from yeast cultures. “The weeks you’re not busy, you try to get into the lab,” said the biology major from Nova Scotia.

The owner of Jeffords Steel and Engineering in Plattsburg, N.Y., Jeffords is convinced that students who acquire work experience prior to graduation are better prepared for the workplace, and provide a tangible value to employers.

Lt. Col. Brett Nelson '89 on the ground in Port-au-Prince
The 23rd Special Tactics Squadron, 720th Special Tactics Group, is overseeing air traffic control at Port-au-Prince airport. Lt. Col. Brett Nelson '89, commander of the squadron, told reporters in a roundtable this afternoon that air operations were continuing, although they had experienced a “significant slowdown” because of a lack of ground support equipment.

Isaac Abiodun's West African homeland of Nigeria is plagued by wretched highway conditions and land erosion problems. Armed with an MCE from Norwich and a PhD from the University of Stafford in the UK, the 43-year-old civil engineer hopes to change that. "My PhD research will focus on how public-private partnerships can encourage the additional finance, innovation and efficiency that could lead to sustainable infrastructure provision in Nigeria," he said.

Master of Arts in Military History Spring Staff Ride
This exciting online course examines the 1864 Overland Campaign conducted by General Ulysses S. Grant against the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Nine weeks of directed readings will culminate in a trip to Virginia for a weeklong staff ride to the major battlefields of the campaign. The course is open to anyone, but enrollment is limited.

The Sullivan Museum and History Center is planning to install an exhibition on “Memories of WWII,” which will include artifacts and stories from NU alumni who served in many theaters during the War. To continue the success of the “Cadets Skate for the Cure” Event the MGAA and Norwich Women’s Hockey Team will auction off specially created jerseys worn by the Women’s Hockey Team as they beat St. Michaels 6-0 on January 29 in front of 600 fans. During the event we raised $1124 for the Susan G Komen Foundation. Thank you to everyone who came out to the game.
