Navy lieutenant Chris Matters '99 was aboard the USS Boxer when word came that the Maersk Alabama, a merchant ship, had been attacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia, and its captain, Vermonter Richard Phillips, had been taken hostage. This year's Staff Ride took eight graduate students and four undergraduates on an in-depth tour of Civil War battlefields.
