On October 25th, more than thirty Norwich alumni and friends gathered at the Barrel Oak Winery in Delaplane, Virginia. It was a genuinely gorgeous day, and the valley was in its glorious colors. The setting of the winery gave usa great view of the Virginia countryside. The group enjoyed the wine tasting, food, and good fellowship. Those in attendence represented fifty years of NU alumni classes (1960-2010). We are already planning next years event. Come join us!

As summer comes to a close we can report that it was a great season for the NU Club of Washington, DC. In addition to our monthly luncheons we hosted two stellar events:
Red Sox vs. Nationals: 120 alumni, students, friends and family joined together on a beautiful summer evening at the new Nationals Ballpark in downtown DC. After an hour long social at the Red Loft bar we all sat together in great seats in rightfield to cheer our favorite team on. While Red Sox hats and shirts definitely dominated the Norwich section we had a great time despite the Sox's loss. We are looking forward to making a trip to the ballpark an annual affair.
Student Sendoff and Alumni BBQ: The NU Club of Washington, DC hosted their annual Student Sendoff at Fort Ward Park in Alexandria on August 2. Sixty alumni, faculty, staff, students, family, and friends gathered on a typical Washington, DC summer afternoon (rainy to start, sunny and warm at the end) to send ten DC area freshmen off to Norwich! All ten freshmen enjoyed the opportunity to meet each other, as well as learn about the Corps through the eyes of an upperclassman, along with young and old alums. A great deal of information and Norwich lore was shared at both the parent and student question and answer sessions. Thanks to all for their willingness to share their expertise and experiences! This event would not have been possible without the outstanding support of Tony Maida ‘77, our Logistics Crew Chief and Chef, our alumni office liaison Allison Sultan for bringing the cool NU give-aways and manning the sign-in table, and Carl Geary for reserving this location and helping with set-up before jumping on a plane to the west coast!

Almost 70 DC area alumni and students gathered together at Sine’s for our club’s annual Networking Social. It was a great event with countless professional connections being made. During the evening conversations centered around navigating the DC job market, employment opportunities offered by alumni and internships for current NU students. Color coded nametags helped people to identify one another and their reason for attending the event. And, of course, everyone had Norwich stories and memories to share. Summer events for the DC club include tentative plans for a day at the Washington Nationals and our traditional Student Sendoff BBQ. We hope to see you soon!

Thank you to the many Norwich family members that joined us for our annual Holiday Brunch this past Sunday. It was a pleasure to ring in the holiday season with you and to take a moment from this busy time of year to reconnect with old (and new) Norwich friends.
We missed those of you that weren't able to join us and wanted to take a moment to share with you a little about the day. We kicked off the brunch with a welcome from NUAA President (and former NU Club President) Mark Curley '89. He warmly welcomed the group and didn't hold us back from the buffet for too long! The food was fabulous with Fort Myers really pulling out the stops for a wonderful meal. During dessert we enjoyed hearing from Chairman of the NU Board of Trustees GEN Gordon R. Sullivan '59 USA (Ret.) as well as featured speaker Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Frank Vanecek. Dr. Vanecek called upon his 33 years of service to Norwich to give us all a clear picture of the state of affairs on the Hill. From academics to athletics, from new construction to incoming classes the prospects for the future of Norwich are very exciting.
Almost 100 alumni and friends joined us for the brunch and we hope to see all area alumni at future NU Club of Washington, DC events. 2009 will be a great year for our club - keep your eyes open for emailed event invitations throughout the year. And, don't forget, we gather monthly on the first Wednesday of the month at noon at Sine's Irish Pub in Arlington, VA. Join us for a great lunch and wonderful Norwich friendships!

On a beautiful, sunny Sunday afternoon in late October, thirty-five Norwich alumni and friends gathered for the annual DC Alumni Club wine tasting at Chateau O'Brien in Markham, VA. It was a spectacular day, matched by the fine wines and great conversations about shared NU experiences of the alumni that ranged from class of 1951 to the class of 2006. On of the patrons of the winery said, "I don't know Norwich University, but you sure are a great bunch of people that know how to have a good time." We are already planning for next year!
Attention all DC, Northern VA, and Southern MD Motorcyclists. I'm looking to organize our first ever DC Club Ride. More details to follow soon. Email me at curleymark@yahoo.com with questions or if you have an idea for a motorcycle event.
On Saturday November, 22nd members of the Norwich University community, led by NU Alumni Association President Mark Curley ’89, marked the 145th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address. The annual event, organized and planned each year by Gettysburg Historian Greg Hillebrand ’89, included the planting of US and Vermont state flags on the graves of the 61 Vermonters buried in the Soldiers’ Cemetery. As a part of the ceremony, a personal letter from Vermont Governor Jim Douglas was read. The day’s event concluded with at nightfall with a luminaria ceremony in the cemetery -- a moving tribute to the fallen.

Thanks to those that attended our annual freshman sendoff at Fort Ward Park. We had a great turnout...over 80 alumni, students, friends, and family enjoyed great food, fellowship, and the opportunity to send off nine new DC area freshman. The event was a great success...mainly due to the support of some outstanding corps and civilian upperclassmen. All of us were particularly impressed with all the students in attendance. Special thanks to Alumni Office, especially Allison Sultan (and her family) for all her help with this event!

The NU Club of Washington DC hosted their annual holiday brunch at the Fort Myer Officer’s Club on December 9, 2007. Thanks to the tireless efforts of our DC Club Vice President, Ms. Marcie Williams, the event was a tremendous success! 130 members of our local Norwich family gathered together to enjoy some great food and fellowship. It was great to see such a mixed crowd of people...young alums, older alums, wives, husbands, parents, kids. Congratulations to Mr. Jack Basil for winning the “Most Distinguished” alum award!
Dr. Richard Schneider took time out of his very busy schedule to share the latest news from the “Hill”. He brought down the house with a great presentation, full of good information and his trademark one liners! A special thanks to Paul Bova and Allison Sultan for attending…I am grateful for the all the outstanding support they continue to provide to our club!
