Our Annual Student Sendoff

Our Student Sendoff will be held on the first Saturday of August in 2010. For the past thirteen years it has been held at Lake Luzerne, NY and has included a whitewater raft trip down the Sacandaga River, courtesy of Pat Cunningham, NU '61, owner of The Hudson River Raft Company. We are planning to hold it there again in 2010.

Mark your calendar now!  Our 2010 Sendoff will be on August 7, 2010.  More details to be announced shortly.

2009 Student Sendoff and Alumni Rafting Trip

The Norwich University Club of the Capital District of New York sponsored its seventeenth annual Sendoff on August 8. As has become a pleasant tradition, the Sendoff was held at the Hudson River Rafting Co. in Lake Luzerne, NY. Warm weather and sunny skies after a very soggy July ensured a good time was had by alums and their families, as well as incoming students from the newly selected Class of 2013. After enjoying 1 ½ hours rafting on the Hudson more than 70 people gathered for a picnic complete with hamburgers and hot dogs, Dave Hicks '50 famous baked beans, fruit salad provided by Heidi Passalacqua, and tasty baked goods provided by Laurie Kotecki. Four members of the Class of 2013 attending from the Capital District area were John Cooper, Frank Halstead, Jamie Hartjen, and Tyler Mullan.

A number of current students were also on hand to enlighten the incoming students about what to expect. Silas Bowerman, Class of 2010, spoke eloquently about his experiences as an incoming student and what to expect on the Corps side when arriving at Norwich. Kristina Quinlan related some of her thoughts on adjusting to college life as a civilian student. Other current Norwich students attending the event were: Charles Bousa ‘12, Stephanie Scott ‘11 and Joseph Moeller ‘10.

Additionally, a gift was made to the University in memory of the Sendoff’s first and continually loyal chef for many years, Tom Minerley ’73. His dedication to grilling kept innumerable hungry people fed at many Sendoff events. Unfortunately, Tom passed away this spring. Stepping in to fill the void was John Tulloch ’74, who lent his culinary expertise as master grill chef, aided by Fred Van Alstyne ’67. Many thanks to the alumni who generously donated food and items to the picnic, to Pat Cunningham for his continued generosity to our local students and alumni, and to all others attending, whose company made for a most pleasurable August afternoon.

Norwich vs. Skidmore - February 13, 2009

On Friday, February 13 about 70 Norwich supporters watched Norwich hockey play Skidmore. Great game!   Event organizer Fred VanAlstyne '67 wrote:

"We had a great pre-hockey game turn-out at the Parting Glass in Saratoga. The Parting Glass could not have been more accommodating with good food and service. The game turn-out was super with over 50 attending and spirits were high in support of NU. I had hoped NU would kick butt, but we played to a tie in the last period. Better than an "L" in the column anyway. In spite of the final score we can say that we all had a great time!"
