In our increasingly mobile society, many do not feel a close tie to the area in which they spend their final years. This is especially true in retirement communities.
Responding to this concern, and with the understanding that many members of the Norwich community feel a strong tie to the University, the Norwich University Cemetery Association offers a final resting place in a quiet, peaceful setting on a hillside several hundred feet above the Dog River Valley floor. The site, known locally as the “Dole Farm,” overlooks the Northfield campus of Norwich University.
Interment will be limited to human remains of those associated with Norwich University and Vermont College as follows:
- Alumni including non-graduates
- Employees who have or had served the University ten years or more
- Trustees, including past and present members
- Board of Fellows, including past and present members
- Friends (Persons who have shown a special interest in and concern for the welfare of Norwich University.)
- Spouses and children (natural or adopted) of the above list (spouses includes former, present, widows or widowers)

A selection of our community’s reflections about why they would be interested in a burial site in the Norwich cemetery are as follows:
In Keeping with Norwich's values: “The history of Norwich, the knowledge that Norwich will continue to do the right thing and keep up tradition and honor.”
A dedication to the Norwich experience: “Because my experience at Norwich taught me so much about myself and life, and I love the school and want to remain close to it.” “Because being a Norwich graduate is how I want to be remembered...Norwich is a very special place, four of the best years of my life.”
A feeling of home: “I feel closer to my school than any other place.” “I spent a lot of time up there as a cadet. It was my peaceful place. It has significance to me -- no other cemetery would feel like home.”
