Greetings from the Hill

One of the newest members of the Alumni Office staff may be the youngest, but her Norwich roots have been growing for a century. Emily Shapiro ’11 is a fifth generation Legacy and the first female in her family to attend NU. Her lineage includes great-grandfather Max Ayers, Class of 1913, grandfather Gleason Ayers ’40 (pictured with Emily), and uncles Robert ’64, Richard ’67, and David Ayers ’74. Her father, Andy Shapiro, received his M.A. from Vermont College in 1987. Call or stop by the Alumni Office and Emily is likely to greet you.

Best—

Diane Scolaro
Asst. Vice President of Alumni & Volunteer Relations

Legacy March strengthens bodies and minds
Norwich University professor Gary Lord leads a group of cadets in a tour of
Norwich from the town bandstand yesterday. Twenty-five students left for the Legacy March, 50 miles from Norwich to Northfield. (Valley News — Geoff Hansen)More than two-dozen Norwich students took part in a three-day, 50-mile hike to recreate the ties between Norwich and Northfield, Vt. The Legacy March is a re-enactment of the 1866 trek students made from their burned-out quarters in Norwich to their new home in Northfield. Along the way, they took part in experiential learning opportunities with several professors.

Homecoming feedback wanted!
Did you attend homecoming this year? While your memories of the weekend are still fresh, we urge you to fill out a short survey about your experience. Let us know what you enjoy most about Homecoming, and what we can do to improve. Your input is valuable and will help us plan for future events.

Myths and rumors, share your favorites
Rumors and myths have been a part of the Norwich landscape since its earliest days and they continue to thrive today. But have you ever stopped to wonder if there's any truth to them? Send your favorite rumor, legend or myth, along with the years you attended NU to rumors@alumni.norwich.edu. A group of alumni sleuths will do the research and separate fact from fiction. You can see the results on the NU Connections page of LinkedIn.

Consider NU in your End-of-Year Giving
As we approach the year’s end, remember that charitable giving to the University must be completed by December 31 to receive a 2011 tax deduction. The IRA Charitable Rollover provision also ends on December 31. This tax-wise charitable giving opportunity allows anyone 70½ and older to give Norwich up to $100,000 directly from an IRA. The distribution is not taxed and can count toward your annual Required Minimum Distribution. Contact Ann Aikens at (802) 485-2328 or aaikens@norwich.edu for more information.
