Todd Lecture Series brings Pulitzer Prize-winning author to campus
Three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning author Rick Atkinson was the honored guest speaker at Norwich University's School of Graduate and Continuing Studies (SGCS) Week 2 Commencement on Friday, June 25. On Thursday, the best-selling author of five books on military subjects was the featured spring speaker for the popular Todd Lecture Series.

Journey to the bottom of the earth
Electrical and computer engineering major Stephen Emmons is postponing the first semester of his junior year to join a research team that will explore one of most desolate areas on Earth, the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, for two months in the fall of 2010.

Grad injured in bomb blast receives Defense Medal for Valor
A project manager overseeing construction of two medical clinics at the Iraqi army base, Alan Johnston '82 pushed everyone to the floor when the first bomb went off. After the second bomb exploded, he quickly began treating people for their injuries, despite suffering head injuries in the first blast.
Johnston, 50, who served in the Army 10 years before leaving the service in 1988, said he is honored to receive this latest medal, which is equal to the Army's Distinguished Service Cross.

Injured Norwich University grad Ofc. Omar Connor '97July 17 benefit for injured NU grad
The Lunenburg (Mass.) Police Relief Association is holding a benefit for Ofc. Omar Connor '97, who suffered a broken neck in the line of duty on May 5, and faces a lengthy and challenging recovery. The event, featuring music, entertainment, raffles and food, will take place July 17, from 6-11 pm, at the Eastwood Club, 328 Townsend St., Fitchburg. Tickets are $10. All proceeds will benefit the Connor family: Omar, his wife Mandy and their six-month-old daughter Alexis. Donations can be mailed to the Lunenburg Police Relief Association, P.O. Box 316, Lunenburg, MA 01462.

Virtual classmates meet face to face at residency
After working exclusively online for a year and a half, the 25 graduate students in the Norwich nursing program are getting to know each other in person. "It was really exciting," said Nida Mouser of Washington. "It's almost like having a friendship and you haven't seen them for a long time."

SGCS awards master's degrees at June residencies
Kevin Beal '05 & M'08 shoulders the primary responsibility for planning and executing the two residencies, when more than 650 students from 10 programs spend five days on campus. "Nearly all of the graduate students who arrive on campus.have never been to Norwich or Vermont before," says Beal. "Our biggest challenge while they are here is to make sure their expectations are filled and they leave with a positive experience."
