Celebrating the Norwich Forever! campaign
Norwich Forever!Norwich is marking its most successful campaign ever in part with the publication of The Norwich Forever! Campaign: Achieving Our Goals, Celebrating Our Success, a report that summarizes the $82 million fundraising effort. “Because of your generosity, we can now rest assured that Alden Partridge’s vision for this great University will continue for generations of students not yet born,” says GEN Gordon R. Sullivan, USA (Ret.) ’59 in the opening pages. “By giving to this campaign, you have become part of the legacy of Norwich, forever.”

Leahy Announces $1.6 Million for Cyber Security Research at Norwich University
Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) says a new infusion of $1.6 million in federal funding that he has secured for Norwich University’s Center for Counterterrorism and Cyber Crime will continue the Center’s work in countering threats to the nation’s cyber networks. Leahy has sponsored funding for ongoing research and training work at the Center since he won designation of Norwich’s program as a national counterterrorism resource center nearly a decade ago.

South Hall receives Gold LEED Certification
Norwich University's South Hall Dorm Norwich University officials have been awarded LEED® Gold certification established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) for its South Hall dormitory. “South Hall’s LEED certification demonstrates tremendous green building leadership,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “The urgency of USGBC’s mission has challenged the industry to move faster and reach further than ever before, and South Hall serves as a prime example with just how much we can accomplish.”

Former Norwich president Loring Hart recuperating
Former president Loring Hart is recuperating from a recent illness in an extended care facility in Maine. President Hart served as head of the English Department from 1961 – 1968, becoming a full professor in 1964. He was appointed dean of the University and vice president in 1968. Dr. Hart served as president of Norwich from 1972 – 1982 before retiring to his native state of Maine. Dr. Hart’s wife, Marilyn, is recovering from surgery in a separate facility. Dr. Hart’s family has expressed that both convalescents would greatly appreciate hearing from Norwich family members. Cards and get well wishes, addressed separately to Loring or Marilyn, should be mailed to P.O. Box 13, Yarmouth ME 04096.

2002 graduate hurt in Afghanistan returns to the States
Norwich University grad Sgt. Arthur Barnes IV '02Sgt. Arthur Barnes IV '02 has returned from Afghanistan where he was critically wounded in combat, and he is being treated at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Barnes was injured while riding in a vehicle which was helping extract troops pinned down by enemy forces. Barnes' vehicle, the second of three traveling through a narrow valley, hit an improvised explosive device.

Norwich nursing grad comes to aid of overheated toddler aboard jet
When the air conditioning on US Airways flight 1106 to Philadelphia failed, temperatures in the cabin reached 115 degrees. Fortunately for one young passenger, NU grad Nicole Palardy '09 was on board.
"It was definitely a scary scenario for everyone," she said.

Terror 101: Norwich grad students explore the roots, and remedies, of terrorism

That’s not necessarily a terrorist,” explains U.S. Army Captain and M'10 Norwich University grad Jocolby Phillips. “It’s the guys outside of Iraq, the al Qaeda-type leaders, that you really want to go after.”

Memorial Golf Tournament in Maine honors the life, service and memory of 1996 graduate
www.majorleighmemorialscholarship.comA memorial golf tournament will be held on September 5 at the Belgrade Lakes Golf Club in Belgrade, Maine in honor and memory of Major Samuel C. Leigh, a 1996 Norwich graduate and Marine Corps officer who died on October 28, 2009, when the AH1-Super Cobra that he was piloting was struck by a C-130 Coast Guard plane off the coast of San Diego. Major Leigh was stationed at Camp Pendleton assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 469. Three close high school friends of Sam’s are planning this tournament to celebrate his life, his memory and his faithful service in the United States Marine Corps.

NROTC Cadets run for a cause Norwich Naval ROTC cadets have set a team goal of donating $5,000 to the Semper Fi Fund, a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance and quality of life solutions for ill or injured Marines. The Cadets have been collecting pledges of support prior to running in the Marine Corps Marathon on October 31, and they are still $2,000 short of their goal. You can support their cause by donating directly through the team’s website at
