A Message from COL Stephen Smith, USA ‘84 -Updates on MCW Company

Date: 5/17/2013
In the wake of last week’s announcement that we have stood down the Rescue Team component of Mountain & Cold Weather Company, there have been a number of conversations between Army ROTC and the MCW Affinity Group to clarify the future development of the company. As we developed the plan outlined below, our goal has been to ensure that Mountain & Cold Weather Company will continue to conduct the highest caliber military mountain leader development program of any institution in the United States.

As a formal part of Army ROTC, MCW consists of a company headquarters and 3 platoons. First and second year students may participate in MCW if they are enrolled with an ROTC program at Norwich University. Students in their Junior or Senior years may participate if they are CONTRACTED with an ROTC program. Members who are unable or unwilling to accept a contract will be encouraged to join the Norwich University Mountaineering Club (formerly the climbing club) so that they may continue to grow as recreational mountaineers. Members of the MCW Cadre will work with the Mountaineering Club advisors to further the excellence of that program.

The higher level Army ROTC military mountaineering training will be available exclusively to those who will be serving as officers in the armed services. All training will be reviewed and certified by the AROTC Professor of Military Science to ensure compliance with the Army Doctrine. The Company will use a three tiered approach to mountain leader development. Click here to read more.

A Message from Dr. Frank Vanecek, Vice President for Enrollment & Student Life:

Date: 5/9/2013
Dear members of the Norwich community,

I am writing to tell you of a change within the Mountain and Cold Weather Company (MCW), a specialty unit of the Corps of Cadets that falls under the policy and supervision of active-duty Army ROTC instructors. COL Stephen V. Smith ’84, the Norwich professor of military science and Army ROTC’s commanding officer, is reorganizing one aspect of MCW to better reflect its current mission.

Effective Fall 2013, the component of MCW known as the Rescue Team will cease to exist. Recently, the Rescue Team performed training that had not been approved by the Norwich Army ROTC department and lacked an approved risk assessment. The Rescue Team’s lack of a mission, coupled with the unauthorized training exercises, prompted COL Smith to evaluate the MCW mission and make structural changes. Click here to read more.

A message from President Richard W. Schneider

Date: 5/3/2013
For the past three years we have been discussing how to improve the Honor Code administrative process. It began with the recommendations of the first Blue Ribbon Committee on the Corps in 2010, and continued with the Civilian Blue Ribbon Committee in 2011, the Corps and Civilian Honor Committees, the Honor System Planning Committee, and most recently with the Student Government Association.

I want to be very clear: the Honor Code is, and will remain, the same for everyone. And by ‘everyone’ I mean faculty, staff, and all students. All of us need to embrace and be held accountable by each other in our pledge that we “will not lie, cheat, or steal or tolerate those that do.” It is central to Norwich’s identity and the essential element in the character molding that goes on at Norwich University. Protection and rigorous enforcement of our Honor Code will ensure a prosperous future because it is what differentiates us from other universities and colleges. It also drives the ethos of our alumni. Click here to read more.

President announces largest gift in Norwich history

Date: 4/26/2013

I am thrilled to announce that at the April 25, 2013, Board of Trustees dinner, COL (IL) J. N. Pritzker, IL ARNG (Retired) committed $25 million toward the University’s upcoming bicentennial campaign.

This is by far the largest gift in our 194-year history. It will transform the University and make a significant impact on future generations of students and faculty. Col. Pritzker served on Norwich’s Board of Trustees from 1997 to 2007. His gift is a challenge to current, former and emeriti trustees to cumulatively match the contribution.

We will publicly launch the bicentennial campaign at Homecoming 2014, and this gift positions us to be successful in meeting our fundraising goals.

“It gives me great joy to support Norwich’s upcoming fundraising campaign with this gift to ensure that it has the facilities and resources to meet every challenge as it begins its third century of service to the nation,” said Pritzker. “There is no other place like Norwich University. This gift demonstrates my dedication to the University, its mission and my faith in its leadership.”

Col. Pritzker is president of the Tawani Foundation, trustee emeritus and founder of the Pritzker Military Library in Chicago. This historic donation was made through the foundation.

We are all here at Norwich for one purpose: to educate America’s future leaders. I am humbled by this charge and extremely grateful for Col. Pritzker’s remarkable support as we prepare to celebrate the 200th anniversary of our founding in 2019.

Race for Recovery

Date: 4/25/2013
Pat Morales, a Northfield High School graduate, distinguished athlete and student at Norwich University, sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) last year. His family was told Pat was going to be left in a vegetative state for the rest of his life, and that if he did wake out of his coma, he would have little to no brain activity – he wouldn’t be able to walk, talk, recognize anyone – much less see. To the doctors’ surprise, not only did Pat continue to breathe on his own when life support was removed, but he is enjoying 20/30 eyesight, is walking with assistance, talking, and has dreams of one day running again and returning to school. Click here to watch the You Tube video.
The Center for Civic Engagement is hosting the Race for Recovery 5K on Sunday, April 28, 2013.If you don’t want to run/walk, participate in the Zumbathon. Pat would love to see them there in support – because he, too, will be participating in the race – for his own recovery.
Message from the President - Boston Marathon

Date: 4/16/2013
Our thoughts and prayers go out to those members of the Norwich family who were affected by the tragedy at yesterday’s Boston Marathon. In addition to the alumni, students and friends of the University who live in the Boston area, the Norwich family was also there to participate in or observe the historic race.

We are aware of a number of immediate members of the Norwich community who participated in the race and are safe. If you know of others impacted by yesterday’s events in Boston, please contact the alumni office at alumni@norwich.edu

We are grateful for the first responders who assisted during the aftermath of the explosions. Their work is one of many stories of bravery and generosity that occurred yesterday.

This attack, which brought senseless death and injury to innocent people, goes against our Norwich values. We are protectors and defenders. We have educated our students on these values, and our alumni live them.

Know that we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with all of our Norwich family during this difficult time. This type of disaster makes us more resolute in our mission of preparing the next generation of leaders for America and the world.

Norwich Forever!

Date: 4/11/2013
Thanks in large part to the Post-9/11 GI Bill and the Yellow Ribbon program, veterans are returning home from war and attending college in record numbers...
Norwich and the other 18 member institutions of the Association of Vermont Independent Colleges (AVIC) are generally small and therefore agile enough organizations to respond appropriately and with compassion to the needs of veterans. Click here to read the entire article.
